Accelerated Reader
The goal of all reading instruction is to help students become lifelong learners who love to read. Accelerated Reader is a motivational program for individual student reading practice. Every child in grades K-5 has taken a test through STAR Literacy or STAR Early Literacy to determine the most effective range for him/her to practice reading. This ZPD, or Zone of Proximal Development is a reading range of books that will challenge the student without causing frustration or loss of motivation. During the reading time, both fluency and endurance are improved. As the year progresses, teachers monitor student progress, adjusting the ZPD ranges as needed. Throughout the year, students will select books and read books in their zone and take computerized tests when finished reading. The multiple choice question tests are made up of 5, 10, or 20 comprehension and recall questions. After completing the test, the student is shown how many questions were answered correctly. Please see our link to a listing of all Accelerated Reader books that we have at River Ridge.
River Ridge has created an Honors Booklist which includes many classic titles in children's literature. The books range in both reading levels and point values. This list was created with the intention of allowing children to read good literature despite the zone within which they are currently reading. Students will need to read all 100 points to receive Honors Certification while at River Ridge. They may continue reading and completing the list from grade level to grade level. Teachers will initial, date, and mark the point value, when the student has passed the AR test with 80% accuracy.
